Quaternary ammonium or quaternary phosphonium compounds are used extensively as industrial biocides for the inhibition of microbial growth in cooling waters .

QUAT's are particularly effective at stripping slimes and algi from metal surfaces, where other non-oxidising or oxidising biocides provide a more effective kill. QUAT's are also effective "wetting agents" and are used extensively in surface cleaning agents/chemicals for sanitation purposes.
